The Art Institute of Austin is calling all DJs and Laptop Musicians to come flex their skills at the inaugural Ai180. Battling through 5 rounds of competition, you’d better come prepared to show your best stuff quickly; contestants will have three minutes per round to show the crowd and the judges why they deserve a pass to the next round.

32 musicians go head-to-head, battling to win a recording session in our brand new recording studio, designed by Grammy Award winner John Storyk. Think you have what it takes to win the inaugural Ai180 championship? Submit your one-minute “radio friendly” sample at or before 12:00 a.m. local time on October 26, 2008 and we’ll let you know by October 27, 2008 if you’ve been selected to compete.

To make the contest more interesting, each contestant will be allowed to perform with one support artist. A support artist can be a rapper, singer, or dancer, who you think will enhance your show. So whether you decide to spin vinyl with a breakdancer, or rock your laptop and MIDI controller with a soul singer, the competition is yours for the taking. Just make sure to bring your best stuff, or expect to get lost in the crowd.

Because this is an all-ages event, submissions for consideration, as well as performances in the competition, must be “radio friendly.” Any use of questionable material (as judged by our Audio Production team) will be grounds for immediate disqualification. You don’t want to forfeit, so bring music that is free of curse words and questionable themes, and make sure your support artist does the same.

There will be no alcohol served, or permitted at the event. Anyone found in violation will be asked to leave. Any contestant found in violation will be disqualified and asked to leave.
